FARNE - Folk Archive Resource North East - is an exciting and innovative project bringing Northumbrian music to people's homes across the world. Supported by the New Opportunities Fund, FARNE has gathered material from across North East England to create a folk music archive on the Internet. Material including song lyrics, tunes, sound recordings and photographs are all available from here.
The FARNE site illustrates how life and times have changed in the North East, with songs about industry, conflicts, leisure and entertainment. FARNE shows how music has developed in the region, allowing us to celebrate our rich cultural heritage today. From Atkinson's tunebook of 1694 to twentieth century sound recordings, there's something for everyone.
You don't need a knowledge of Northumbrian music to enjoy the site. Why not look for a song about your home town or about an event in History? Or go to our Listening Post to listen to some Northumbrian tunes. To find out some of the basics about Northumbrian music, enjoy our 'Learn' section, which features background and beginners info.
The links below tell you more about the project. Enjoy!
