The Local Studies section of Newcastle City Library was established in 1884 and houses the largest collection of local material in the North East. The collection covers Tyne & Wear, Northumberland and Durham with particular emphasis on Newcastle. It contains about 45,000 books as well as other printed material. This includes a wide range of reports, pamphlets, periodicals, election leaflets, community newsletters and posters. The archives also contain some of the first books printed in Newcastle, dating from the 1640’s. FARNE was particularly excited by the collection of letters, songs and images compiled by Thomas Allan, a local printer and publisher, which were used in the publication of his famous ’Tyneside Songs’.
