An example of a schottiche from a mid 19th century tunebook
The schottische is somewhere between a hornpipe and a jig, often notated in 6/8 time, but sometimes is found in 4/4 time. The form, as known in the British Isles, bears little or no resemblance to the French dance of the same name.
In this short audio clip we hear Northumbrian musician and dance teacher Ada Reed, from Dinnington, recorded in 1971, playing the Highland Schottische on the melodeon.
