Programme Nine

Joe Hutton, Bay Folk Club, Cullercoats, 8th April 1979.
This amazing solo concert, recorded by Phil Ranson, was played by Northumbrian Piper, Joe Hutton at the Bay Folk Club, Cullercoats, on 8th April 1979. Best known for his work with fiddle player Willy Taylor and mouth organ player Will Atkinson, with whom he made many concert and festival appearances in the 1980s, Joe Hutton had a distinctive style which is easily recognizable. This was partly due to the magnificent set of Ivory pipes, made by T. Errington Thompson, which Joe played and partly down to technique which he learnt from G.G. Armstrong. His methodical approach to playing sets lets each successive melody build on the foundation laid by the one before - Slow airs are followed by hornpipes; jigs lead neatly into reels. The playing is crisp, precise and confident. Much of Joe's style can be heard in the playing of today's generation of players. And so the tradition goes on. Maintained and nurtured by each successive generation.
